Installing Windows 7 as the sole operating system

The installation sequence will be as follows.

First you need to ensure that the computer can boot from DVD. You can do this in one of two ways.

Change the boot order of the computer using the BIOS. For example, in those BIOS versions where the main menu of the program is displayed in two columns, you usually need to go to the Advanced BIOS Features section, select the First Boot Device option and set the value to CDROM or CD / DVD. If the main BIOS SETUP menu is displayed as a horizontal line at the top of the screen, these options should be looked for in the BOOT section. Call the BIOS boot menu. To do this, after turning on the computer, you need to press the boot menu call key, which can be found in the instructions for your board or tips at the bottom of the screen. After the menu appears, select the DVD drive in it, insert the installation disc and press the Enter key.

Boot your computer from the Windows 7 installation disc. You may need to press any key at the Press any key to boot from CD or DVD prompt to begin booting the installer.

Wait until the files needed to run the installer are copied and the first dialog box appears. In this window, you need to specify regional settings: installation language, date and time format, and keyboard layout. After selecting all options, click Next.

The next step is to choose what you want to do: install Windows 7 or try to restore a previously installed system. Click the Install button to start the installation.

When installing test versions of Windows 7, a window will appear prompting you to select the version of the system to install. On sales DVDs, the system version will be automatically selected and this window will not appear.

In the next window, you will have to read the license agreement, check the I accept the license terms box to accept it, and then click the Next button.

The next step is to choose between new installation and update. But since we booted from the DVD, the upgrade option will not be available. To continue with the installation, select the Full installation option.

Next, you will see a list of available hard disk partitions, one of which you will have to choose to install Windows 7. This is a very important step, the features of which were discussed above. Click the desired partition, and then click Next to continue with the installation.

If you are installing Windows 7 on a RAID array, you may need to install an additional RAID controller driver. To do this, insert a floppy disk, CD or flash card with a driver from the hardware manufacturer and click the Download link.

In the window that appears, click OK to automatically search for the driver, or Browse to manually specify the folder with the driver. After the system detects the required driver, select it from the list and click Next.

When installing Windows 7 on a new unpartitioned HDD you can choose unallocated disk space for installation, then two partitions will be automatically created during the installation process: one is hidden, for boot files, and the second is for the system, programs and data.

If the current partition configuration is not to your liking, you can change it by clicking the Disk Settings link. After that, the following commands will become available.

Create. To create a new partition, select an unallocated space in the list of partitions, click the Create link, enter the partition size in megabytes, and click the Apply button. When creating the first disk partition, a hidden partition for boot files will also be automatically created.

Delete. To delete a partition, select it in the list, click the Delete link and confirm your actions in the dialog box. Be very careful not to delete the data section by mistake!

Format. The command formats the selected partition in the NTFS file system with default settings. This command is also potentially dangerous, because if you accidentally format the wrong partition, you will lose all the data on it.

Expand. This command allows you to increase the size of a partition using the available disk space. For example, to merge two partitions, first delete the second partition, then run the Extend command on the first partition. As a result of this procedure, the files from the second partition will be deleted, but the files on the first one will remain untouched.

If a previously installed copy of Windows is found on the partition you selected, the installation program will warn you about it. If you confirm your actions, then the files of the previous operating system will be placed in the Windows.old folder.

You will be able to open files from this folder, but you will not be able to use the previous operating system.

After that, the installation of the system will continue automatically. The duration of this process depends on the performance of your computer and can take approximately 10-20 minutes. The computer may restart automatically one or more times. After all operations are completed, Windows 7 will start for the first time.

Installing Windows 7 as a second operating system

To install several operating systems on one computer, you must allocate a separate hard disk partition for each of them. You need to install the older system first, and Windows 7 last. In the following example, we will assume that Windows XP is already installed on drive C:, and we will install Windows 7 on a free partition of the drive.

The sequence of actions will be as follows.

Boot your computer using your operating system.

Insert your Windows 7 installation DVD and wait for it to autorun. If for some reason this does not happen, run the Start > Run command and enter X: \ SETUP, where instead of X, specify the letter of the CD drive. You should see the installer welcome window.

The first dialog box will prompt you to connect to the Microsoft website and download the available updates for installation. Use this option if your computer has a fast Internet connection. Otherwise, you can skip this step by selecting the Don't download the latest installer updates link.

The next step is choosing between a fresh install and an upgrade. To install Windows 7 on another partition, select the Full installation option.

Then you will see a list of hard disk partitions, one of which you will have to select for installing Windows 7. You must specify a partition that does not have installed operating systems and has the necessary disk space (at least 15 GB).

After selecting the partition, the installation will continue automatically. In this case, the computer may automatically restart several times. When you first start Windows 7, several dialog boxes will appear, the features of which will be discussed later.

After installing Windows 7, the operating system selection screen will appear every time you boot your computer. Use the cursor keys to select the boot option, and Enter to confirm. If you do not press any keys, then after a few seconds the default operating system, which is Windows 7, will be launched.

Unlike Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not use the boot.ini file to create a boot menu, but all data about bootable

systems are stored in a BCD (Boot Configuration Data) file.

* Installation in update mode*

To install Windows 7 in update mode, the following prerequisites are required.

You can upgrade to Windows 7 only from Windows Vista or previously installed Windows 7. When upgrading from a previously installed Windows 7, the edition of the system being installed must match exactly the edition you have.

At windows update Vista, you can use a similar or more feature-rich edition of Windows 7. For example, Windows Vista Home Basic can be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, or Ultimate editions.

In the old and new systems, the bit depth and language must match, for example, a 32-bit Russian version of a previous system can only be upgraded to a 32-bit Russian version of Windows 7.

To upgrade from a previous operating system to Windows 7, you must run Setup from a previous version of Windows, as described in the scenario for installing Windows 7 as a second operating system.
