BRAIN SLAUGHTER: PUB QUIZ

RULES OF THE GAME

7 rounds, each with 7 questions. Everyone is different: somewhere you need to guess who the author of the Mona Lisa is, in another - in which film the main hit of the 80s, the song Sweet Dreams by the Eurhythmics, played, in the third - in what sequence the transport should pass on a typical traffic police exam picture. The answers of the team (5 - 8 people) are recorded on the form, referred to the leaders, who enter the results into the table and display it on the screen.

The pub quiz genre ("bar quiz") is widespread in America. There, people sitting at the same table are considered a team, the leader reads the questions into the microphone, and these very “teams” show him the answers written on the plates. Winners - a prize. For more than a year, at least 200 people have been entertaining themselves with something similar in Belarus.

We encountered the restaurant format of the game in Lithuania, - say the organizers of MozgoBoyni Sasha Khanin and Katya Maksimova. - My colleague organized the game Protmūšis (from Lithuanian - "Brain Slaughter") and invited me to play. I played, got involved, and together we began to think about how to organize a game in Minsk. And although we made the first few games in collaboration with colleagues, the Belarusian “Brainstorm” is still not a tracing paper, but an author's project. Each game has its own peculiarity: both in how questions are selected, and in who makes it and how it works with the public, and even in what kind of music is played between rounds. In Lithuania, for example, there are a lot of questions on pure knowledge (this complicates the task and forms a certain contingent of participants), in our country almost all questions are taken by pure logic. For encyclopedic knowledge, there is “What? Where? When?". By the way, players from the club come to us just to relax and drink beer in the company of friends.

- Cooking the game - long?

14 hours. 90% of questions are thought out, found and collected a day before the game. We do not specifically read reference books and encyclopedias: about half of the questions are from the Internet, some are from databases (you can only take logic tasks from there, because it works fine for almost everyone). And it happens that we read some cool article in which there are three interesting facts at once! When you prepare for a game, you are in an intellectual tone: you read, memorize, notice ... For example, in last game there was a question: “How does the trolleybus move the arrow to the left?” It seems that we encounter trolleybuses every day, but it is not clear how this happens. Actually, the authorship of the game is not to come up with something (everything has been invented a long time ago!), But to pick up questions that it would be possible and interesting to solve. So that “oh, it’s so simple!”, And when they say the answer, there was a “wow!” effect in my head. But it depends on the attitude to the game: someone comes for the sake of pleasure, someone - for the sake of sport and self-affirmation.

- And how did you agree with the cafe?

The first few games were played in a different location, then 45 people participated. But the number of participants began to grow, now there are 170 of them. We were advised by the cafe where we play now: "There is a lot of space and huge screens - that's what we need!" Once we came here to drink coffee - and after 5 minutes we agreed: Why not: on a weekday at 19.00 in a cafe located not in the city center, there is almost no one (unless they show football or Eurovision). No one gathers more people than us in this restaurant, even corporate parties! By the way, we were also invited to corporate parties with MozgoBoynia, but this is still primarily a hobby. In addition to the game, we have a normal job (Sasha is a business coach, Katya is his assistant. - Ed.). The best things always come from hobbies.

"MELOTREK": SONGS REVERSE

RULES OF THE GAME

7 rounds, 12 questions each: somewhere you need to guess the song by its introduction, somewhere - played backwards, somewhere - music from advertising, cartoons or movies, somewhere - songs with city names, female names etc. The team - up to 4 people.

If you go into history, we first appeared - "Good People", - recalls Anya Kosolapova - one of the organizers of "Melotrek". - Last winter, we wanted warmth and positive, so we created a community on the social network, where we began to post various positive pictures (it will come in handy later). At the same time, we were sitting tightly at MozgoBoyne (the musical tour, however, was not very fond of). At some point, we thought: why not organize an informal competition for everyone to come, drink, play and listen to good music? We held a competition for friends, everyone liked it. Then we found a place (a club that we used to go to play Crocodile, Mafia, and concerts), invited people from the Internet community created in winter - and for 10 weeks on weekends 60 people have been playing enthusiastically in Melotrek.

Preparing one game takes a whole week, continues Katya Ivashchenko, another member of Good People. - Each of us spends 15 - 20 hours on this (and we also work - programmers, lawyers ...). We need to listen to the material, weed out the unnecessary, test the tasks on each other (are they too primitive or, conversely, complex?). After screening, you need to cut the songs into pieces, prepare two versions: one for questions, the other for answers. And then our friend Lyosha sits down and makes a presentation out of it all for about five hours…

We are very glad that thanks to us people start listening to good music. For example, before the rock "Melotrek" my colleague listened to Led Zeppelin for three hours in a row. When I asked her why, I heard: “We are getting ready! We know modern rock, but not so much classic rock. It turned out that they are so cool - we are still listening to it! The same thing happened on the tour with poets (we asked whose poems are used in popular songs): despite the fact that there were about 50% correct answers, people liked it. In the process of preparation, we are enlightened, and in the process of playing, we enjoy the fact that a pleasant company is gathering. People come who are nice to see, with whom it is nice to play and sing: oh, how they sang together with Lyapisov's "Evpatoria" or "Vladivostok -2000" "Mumiy Troll"!

WHAT ENTERTAINMENT DOES YOU NEED?

I stop being surprised and start to enjoy everything that happens to me thanks to the blog.

Last week in Minsk I was lucky to see Marina mari_kondrateva (but I’ll talk about this later) and even hang out in a blogging company at a large-scale Mozgoboyni party at the invitation of Zhenya coffee_family .

124 teams, more than 700 people and a whole hangar of intellectual emotions!

Brainstorm is an intellectual and entertaining game in the form of a quiz, invented in Minsk in 2012.
Something like our "What? Where? When?", only for friends, in a pleasant atmosphere of a bar or cafe, with a glass and with music.

This format is rather borrowed from England - for about 50 years there have been pub quiz tournaments in bars, where teams compete in guessing simple riddles in the format of a noisy party.

Brainstorm has already become international - in addition to 12 cities of Belarus, it has already been implemented abroad - the game franchise is already operating in Russia, Ukraine and Germany.

To take part in the game, you need to register your team in advance in the appropriate VK or FB group. The cost of participation is 6 rubles per person (about 200 rubles). The team can be from 5 to 10 people.
The game always takes place in cafes, bars or clubs only on weekday evenings (we were lucky - we already flew out on weekends).

Usually the game takes place at the tables in the bar, but we were at the opening of the season. The hangar was full of people!
And here is our blogging team of five people called "Okay, let's come!"

I'll tell you about the main points.
The game is divided into several rounds. The first is the simplest - text riddles (guess the term, name, supplement the fact, continue the quote). A text appears on the screen - in 100 seconds you need to guess and write the answer on the card. We guessed everything, except for one, which we also guessed, but at the last moment we entered another option.

There were also questions under the auspices of "hot news" - a digest of past events is collected, you need to guess which event is meant.

After 100 seconds, you must hand over the round answer sheet to the organizers. The correct answers are announced (usually the most fun moment in each round), points are calculated and the results table is announced. And so after each round.

No encyclopedic knowledge is required in this game. All answers are taken by ingenuity, logic, ordinary knowledge from life.

Further - more difficult. Music round. You need to guess the artist or group by the song. Among the mysteries was one composition of the Belarusian group, frankly unknown to us, and a club track that we heard for the first time. And shazaming, like googling, is a rather bad form in such a game.

The visual questions were tricky too. Find out the author of the picture by a small fragment or a person by the eyes, guess what is missing in the image. All this is not only for knowledge, but also for ingenuity. And arguing, remembering, reasoning in the stream of collective consciousness was a lot of fun!

The most annoying thing is to say the correct option, and enter another one instead. So it was with the Swallow's Nest, which was "removed" from the picture. It's funny that in the photo it is very visible.

The last round is the most dynamic. Blintz is a few questions of 15 seconds each. Answers to them can either significantly raise the team in the ranking, or vice versa - lower it to its very basement. For a correct answer they give a double point, for an incorrect one they take off points, for an empty line they are not punished with anything. So we pulled ahead by as much as 20 points!

Well, I'll show you a few simple riddles to warm up. I forgot to take difficult pictures, I had to think hard there :)
Chur not google!

“People are ready to pay money for food, entertainment and sex. We cannot offer sex. The food is there as well. The entertainment remains. Take care of people and they will make you rich." The creators of the most popular Minsk pub quiz - "Brain Boins" - told KYKY how to make money on people who like to rack their brains.

The idea of pub quizzes was born in England in the late 1970s. Teams gather in the relaxed atmosphere of the bar, drink beer and answer simple and fun questions. The winner receives a prize - usually rather symbolic. Everything is simple, and, as often happens with simple things, brilliant: players can feel the excitement of the fight and at the same time not spoil their mood with a bad result.

The opinion of Pavel Sverdlov, the owner of the Crystal Owl of the Ukrainian TV club “What? Where? When?"

“The brain slaughterhouse is an awl. I go there because my friends are calling me. Questions - slag, dupes from the Internet, and even from sports games. There was a picture at the last game - people's faces were covered, you had to guess who it was. And these were Timati and Kobzon. How to take it? Know all the photos of Timati or all of Kobzon's friends? Very, damn, useful knowledge.
Another picture - a photo of Berlin from an airplane, the western and eastern ones glow with different lights. Well, this is a boyanishche! At the same time, many questions are formulated in such a way that it is possible to come up with three or ten equally probable answers ... In a CHG, for example, a question must contain information that unambiguously leads to the correct answer, otherwise it is not a question. And in Mozgobojna there are no quality requirements for questions, so there is no quality ... I think that for the money that the authors of Mozgobojny collect, one could approach the package much more professionally and come up with something really witty. But why, if the people and so hawala?
I have a huge respect for the authors of the Melotrek project - that's who really invests a lot of time and effort in preparation and 100% works out the money that the participants pay for the game!

Pub quizzes are very popular in America and Europe - in the UK alone, more than 20,000 games take place every week. Intellectual fun came to Belarus only a few years ago, but the public fell in love very quickly: bar quizzes are held in Minsk almost every week, their formats are becoming more diverse, dozens of teams gather for games. The pioneer of the genre in the Republic of Belarus was "Brain Slaughter". For three years, the game of Sasha Khanin and Katya Maksimova has gathered a whole army of players, and not only in Minsk - “Brainstorm” is regularly held in different cities of Belarus, and has recently spread beyond the borders of the country. Where there are many players, there is a lot of money. The organizers of the Belarusian pub quiz told KYKY how fun for friends has become a profitable business.

Where did pub quizzes come from?

Sasha Khanin and Katya Maksimova

Sasha: We have been living in Lithuania for quite a long time, and there we played several similar projects ourselves. There is quite a lot of competition among Lithuanian pub quizzes: when MozgoBoynia was launched in Minsk three years ago, there were already 10-15 different small projects in Vilnius. One of the games was made by our friend, and he offered us a crazy idea for us at that time - to hold a game in Minsk.

Katia: We laughed at once, but after a few months we decided. We translated a couple of packages of questions from Lithuanian into Russian - and started playing.

Was your pub quiz the first in Minsk?

Sasha: To be honest, I have not studied the history of pub quizzes in Belarus - but it seems that there was nothing like this before us.

Katia: Perhaps they had their own closed parties. In Minsk, the sports movement “What? Where? When?”, many teams play here. The ChGK members probably gathered in a more informal atmosphere and played something similar. But we have not seen such a format.

Who came to your first games?

Katia: For the first game, we gathered 60 people - all friends and relatives. This was one of the reasons for launching the game: we spent most of the time in Vilnius, we saw our Minsk friends much less often than we would like - the game allowed us to change that. Then word of mouth worked. It started with 10 teams, and now almost two and a half hundred teams are playing with us, and with each next game they are all added.

When did you get your first paycheck?

Sasha: In the first year there was no income at all, everything went to zero. After all, our friends played with us - and we gave them gifts, bought tangerines for the new year. We just tried to create a friendly atmosphere: to make people interested, to be able to laugh. Everything grew gradually: 60 people, 70, 80 ... If someone had said 3 years ago that I would host events for 400 people 6 times a month, I would probably twist my finger at my temple. I'm not exactly a very shy person with no public speaking experience - but 400 people!

Katia: We never counted money, we initially had a different motivation. When you graduate from university, you start working - you understand that memory slows down, the brain starts to grow dull. What to do? Read books. And in order to read more, you need something to push, motivate you.

Sasha: At first we wanted to solve Scanavi's problems, but we didn't find a textbook.

Katia: So we decided to do something that would make people's brains move, the gears would work. That is, initially we did everything for ourselves - and until recently we did not even notice how much we expanded.

Sasha: What people are willing to pay money for is food, entertainment and sex. We cannot offer sex - except that in questions it constantly slips. We have food. The entertainment remains. Take care of people and they will make you rich. Now everyone who wants to play Brain Slaughter does not fit in one bar, and the games take place for several days in a row, at different venues.

Katia: This is a precedent decision. A lot of teams have gathered - what to do? We decided to play in two days, and then in three. “Brain Slaughter” is being developed not so much by us as by people: many players have gathered - we are looking for a large room, the people wanted a cultural component - we organize musical breaks. People wanted to hold "Brainstorm" in other cities - we opened a franchise.

Sasha: At first there was a dilemma: ask the same questions on the second day - or do new game. Due to natural laziness, they leaned towards the first option. After all, we initially positioned the game as leisure, entertainment, and not a sport. It seems that teams can merge the correct answers - but who needs it? Why fight for a bottle of champagne? (prize for winning the game - ed. note) We have no sponsors, no big prizes, no ratings. People come to relax!

What part of the profit goes to the organization of games?

Katia: We pay everyone who helps us: from the sound engineer to the guys who run around the hall and collect answer sheets. We are not chasing anyone for thanks!

Rusya and Dmitry Shepelevich

Sasha: We have a DJ who is responsible for the atmosphere of the game - I think he does half the job.

Katia: There is a person from whom we rent projectors - Pavel Turonchik, aka Plaha. We pay him for delivery, installation and connection of projectors. Everything is complicated there, whole heaps of wires - it is necessary that the projectors work, and the TVs around the hall, and the sound goes in sync with the picture ...

Sasha: There is also a person who helps us in social networks, with accounting, office work, ticket printing, and the proceeds are transferred to the bank - Dima Shepelevich.

Katia: And the guys who help us on the spot: collect leaflets with answers, help check them and give points.

Do the clubs ask for a specific amount for rent - or is it all for mutual benefit?

Katia: Differently. Some clubs claim a fixed rate, someone asks for a percentage of the proceeds: sometimes 10, sometimes 30. Different institutions have completely different conditions.

Sasha: On average, about 45% of the profit goes to the organization.

Suma performance

Katia: Sometimes we have a group performing - at the opening of the season, for example, Šuma played. The fee, the rental of equipment, the work of a sound engineer - and as a result, the game turns out to be zero, fashion. But, I want to believe, everyone likes it.

How Brainstorm Conquers Cities

For three gaming days, more than 200 teams come to MozgoBoynya, on average 6 people play in each. Participation in the game costs 40.000 - it is not difficult to calculate the total profit. Every month there are 2-3 games. This, however, is not all the earnings of the organizers - MozgoBoinya has been franchised all over Belarus.

How did the geographical spread - the capture of the "Brain Slaughter" of Belarus - start?

Katia: We didn't capture anyone! There were no advertisements in the newspapers.

Sasha: But the media played an important role in this. The first person who contacted us, Rinat Karimov from Vitebsk, read an article in KP. Before, I could only see in my worst dream that Komsomolskaya Pravda would write about us! Apparently, the stereotypes in my head worked.

Katia: Now we have two teams from Komsomolskaya Pravda playing: editors and journalists. One and the other are amazing.

Sasha: So, when a person from Vitebsk came to us and said that he wanted to make a game in his city, it was a signal for us that income could be converted into passive income. Then everything rolled like a snowball. They announced it a couple of times at the game - and offers poured in: “I want to spend there, I want to go there ...” But in fact, income is not passive in the classical sense: it takes a lot of energy to make “Brain Slaughter” for other cities.

Regional games are held on your questions?

Katia: Yes. Mostly on questions that we wrote for MozgoBoen two years ago.

Sasha: But we have to dig through the database of questions, and this is very cool: we discard questions that are not very successful or not very funny. We have a round of questions on fresh news - and fresh news is sent to all regions. People love to be taken care of, when you can see that the game is made especially for them. It's great to have local questions - and we encourage local organizers to include at least one question about their city in every game.

In how many cities does Brainstorm take place?

Katia: In addition to Minsk, another 9. From Belarusian - Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Brest, Baranovichi, Bobruisk, plus Mogilev will start soon. There is also Bryansk, and in two weeks Peter is launched.

Sasha: We have special conditions for Belarus, and we would like to be evenly distributed throughout the country, so Orsha, Soligorsk, Novopolotsk, Pinsk and Lida are in the plans.

There are more and more pub quizzes in Minsk. How serious is the competition?

Sasha: Due to the fact that we now play for several days, the teams have a choice. Even if we have the same date as another pub quiz, teams can check in with us for another day.

Katia: 90% of the teams that play in alternative projects also play Brainstorm. You open the list of commands - all the names are familiar. In addition, we already have a recognizable “brainstorming” format of questions.

Sasha: We manage to make the questions interesting, so that people have fun, so that they laugh at their own answers - both right and wrong. I participated in many pub quizzes, not only in Lithuania and Belarus - and I think we are the best at questions. I don’t know how correct it is to assess this from my side, but it seems to me that we have become a trendsetter, which they look up to. Alternative projects are often compared to Brainstorm, the organizers themselves usually either go against us or try to copy the format of Brainstorm. And everyone has their own audience. In general, competition keeps us in good shape, spurs us on - so we are very grateful to other Minsk pub quizzes for what they are.

Seasoned players “What? Where? When?" they often criticize "Brain Slaughter": they say, your wording is not so clear, and the test is much softer ...

Katia: The rigidity of the offset is important when the result is important, when there is a rating, when defending the issue is a matter of honor. And we play for fun, and if the team explains its logic very close to the correct one, we will count the answer to it.

We want 12-year-olds to be able to play here, and grandparents too. Why do they need questions from “What? Where? When?"!

Sasha: Brain Slaughter has a human face. Ideal formulations, strict rules for counting questions - this is not the goal. People pay for entertainment, for a good evening, because we keep them awake at halftime.

Will there come a time when you can go into brain-killing retirement with nothing but passive income from the franchise?

Sasha: We hope never! Minsk will probably remain ours until we lose the ability to think or speak. As for the rest of the cities, we will give them more autonomy over time so that this is a classic franchise.

Katia: We take a very small percentage - 10% of the proceeds, plus 30 euros for a package of questions. To get a serious commission, we need to cover 200 cities! Therefore, there is no question of any pension. We don't even see it as a business. We were told a couple of times from outside that we are businessmen, but we look at ourselves and think - is it true, or what?

Sasha: We already have plans for other countries - the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland. They have already arrived in Russia. For other countries, there will be other conditions, more stringent: there, people have a different solvency, and scale, plus the cost of translating and adapting games will be required.

Are there pub quizzes around the world?

Katia: To be honest, we have not studied the market. Perhaps something has grown as a "Brain Slaughter" - in the same America, for example. But there are no analogues of McDonald's in pub quizzes.

Sasha: I hope that in five years we will be able to discuss this topic from a different angle!

to which we propose to answer the readers of Vitebsk Courier. Prizes are awarded to the fastest and smartest!

On October 22, a meeting of intellectuals of our city was held at the Friend Cafe. Vitebsk experts called their fascinating event Brain Slaughter. Its essence is as follows: teams of 5-7 people gather in one of the city's cafes, ready to quickly and correctly answer tricky questions, earn prizes and compete with each other.
