Of course, like clothing items, jewelry was also influenced by fashion: styles, plots, materials, purpose, methods and processing techniques changed century after century. Considering them, one can judge the culture, history, traditions, beliefs of a particular people.
Coins as a material for jewelry: a bit of history
The improvised means of the master sometimes became not even precious stones or gems. For example, animal bones, feathers, glass, shells, and various coins were often used to make jewelry. They are present in the form of a breast necklace, bracelets, pendants, earrings, pendants, amulets, etc. Hence the names came from: “monisto” (beads made of coins), “medallion” (from Latin metallia – metal coin) and others.
In Kievan Rus the princes favored their beloved subjects with "tsatsami" (from the church Slav. a small coin) - decorations in the form of a coin on a chain. They became the prototypes of the modern medal. Later, dukachis or lichmans were worn (a large medal-like coin was placed in the compositional center of the necklace, with a metal bow decorated with various stones attached to it). And in ancient Persia and Byzantium, such products served as symbols of royal power, although they were more pompously and expensively decorated.
But the original meaning of the word "hryvnia", given its etymological meaning, it was precisely the definition of a neck ornament, and only over time it began to denote a specific monetary unit. However, the very custom in Ukraine to make a neck necklace with ducats has survived to this day.
Coins were often used in jewelry for manufacturing objects of sacred power: talismans, amulets, amulets. This was especially common in ancient Eastern civilizations. - various fastenings and auxiliary accessories (fasteners, hooks, loops, studs, dividers, etc.);
- finally, the basis (platform) for the future decoration and the material from which you will make it, that is, the coins themselves.
You can choose any ancient coins, based on their own capabilities and wishes: silver, copper, gold. Wandering through the shops of collectors or numismatists, antique shops and spontaneous flea markets, you will find beautiful specimens for every taste and budget.
It is not necessary to take expensive rare coins for a bracelet or necklace, because they cost and value depend on many factors:
- from what circulation this money came out (someone ruled more, and then a lot of coins were minted, and someone's reign was short-lived, which means that money was issued in a small amount);
- from the historical period to which they belong (the older the coin, the more expensive it will be);
- from the general condition (abrasion, roughness, poorly distinguishable inscriptions and images, etc.).

Surely, many of you have already seen such funny things as coin rings, and now you will not surprise anyone with this. But the progress and imagination of the masters do not stand still, and gradually I began to stumble upon new interesting coin crafts from the same pioneering masters. I want to talk about them in this post.
Let me explain my position right away. Since I myself work with coins, bending them into various obscene states, naturally, I am primarily interested in those crafts from coins that make you think "how is it made?". Therefore, I will not consider various floors / tables / stools and other mosaics where coins are used purely as a cover. I'm interested in geometric changes.
Let's start with a simple one. We cut out the middle of the coin, bend the washer into a cone, bend it to the state of a straight ring with parallel walls, we get a blank.
Further more. We cut this ring in one place. Carefully straighten. It turns out such a stripe. Of course, all this is done with the necessary precautions to preserve the original external and internal design on the coin. In the picture below, this pattern is not visible, because the workpiece is annealed and not yet polished.
Well, now this blank can be bent as you like, getting a lot of different use cases. These are ordinary pendants, and bracelets, and hooks, and tie/money clips. Yes, you never know what fantasy is capable of.
The next level is the creation of earrings.
To be honest, when I first saw this photo, I fell into a stupor for a while. I thought I knew all about bending and bending coins. And here I simply could not understand how to get such a double strip, and even roll it into a ring.
But, as they say, the casket just opened. A year later, I came across these photographs from another master and everything fell into place.
The point was that it was not a strip that needed to be flattened, but simply a coin with a cut-out center. Even before the moment of its arching into the ring. But my brain, fascinated by the stripes, did not let me figure it out.
Okay, earrings, pendants, stripes, it's all great. How about using silver's exceptional stretching abilities? But like this:
The Morgan dollar is a very large coin with a diameter of 38 millimeters made of 900 silver. And with the right annealing, it can stretch to an impressive size.
If you want a more exotic version of the bracelet, then you can do the following. Take an anka in one hand, a punzel in the other. Put a coin in the ankh and sharply bring your hands together several times.

And finally, if you have a CNC milling machine lying around or, much less often, hands grow from the right place, you can take a jewelry jigsaw and create.
